No. The reefs sit in open water inside the Princess Alexandra National Park, which charges snorkellers nothing, so your ticket is the tour fare. The one extra is the National Trust's fee to land on Little Water Cay: $20 for the short tour, $25 for the extended tour and $10 for Half Moon Bay.
How much does a Turks and Caicos snorkeling tour cost?
Shared boats run from $109 to $234 per person, for two and a half to six hours. Private charters are priced per boat, from $1,500 to $3,700 for a party of six to ten, and one is priced at $1,220 per person with a minimum of two. Most shared fares include lunch, drinks and snorkel gear, and your tip is extra on almost every boat.
How far ahead should you book?
Book as soon as your dates are firm, because the popular boats can sell out in the busy weeks. Every tour here refunds in full up to 24 hours before it starts, so booking early costs you nothing if plans change. A few operators confirm within 48 hours rather than instantly, which is one more reason not to leave it to the last day.
Can you cancel if your plans change?

How does a reservation work?
You choose a date, a departure and the number of guests, and most tours confirm straight away. Your confirmation carries the meeting point and the operator's contact, and the fare stays refundable until 24 hours before the start.
What is included in the fare?
On most shared boats: snorkel gear, lunch or snacks, soft drinks, rum punch or beer, and often the 12% government tax. Can you be picked up from your hotel?
Often, yes. Several boats collect guests straight off the beach at selected Grace Bay hotels, the Alexandra Resort boats include hotel pickup and drop-off, and the private charters arrange pickup at a hotel or Turtle Cove Marina. Which snorkeling tour should you book?
Pick by the day you want. The shared half days are the most sociable and add Iguana Island, the sailing catamarans from the Ritz-Carlton beach are calmer and pour an open bar, and a private charter keeps the boat to your own group. Cruise passengers at Grand Turk have their own short trip to Gibbs Cay.
How many people are on a shared boat?
Most shared boats cap the day at 40 or 50, the conch day at 35 and the Grand Turk boat at 30. On a busy day you snorkel alongside plenty of others, so if a quieter reef matters to you, choose a sailing catamaran or a private charter.
Can non-swimmers go snorkeling?
Some boats suit you and some do not. The Bight Park half day lends flotation devices with the gear, while the Grand Turk boat keeps non-swimmers on board for the snorkel. Tell the crew when you board so someone can stay close to you in the water.
How old do children need to be?
Most shared boats take children from 3, and infants ride on a lap; the private charters take any age. The sunset cruise is for adults 18 and over, the private parasail trip starts at 8, and one Blue Haven charter sets its adult band at 15. Check your card before you book.
Is snorkel gear provided?
Yes, on almost every boat: mask, snorkel and fins, and flotation devices on the Bight Park half day. A mask of your own fits best, so bring one if you have it.
Is lunch included?
On most half days, yes: deli sandwiches, fresh fruit or a picnic lunch, with rum punch, beer and sodas. The short reef sail serves snacks, the sunset cruise serves appetizers, and the Half Moon Bay trip adds breakfast. If your card says snacks, eat before you board.
Will you get seasick?
The water off Grace Bay is often calm, but a snorkel stop can still be choppy. If you are prone to it, take a remedy before you board and sit near the back, outside, with your eyes on the horizon.
Are the boats wheelchair accessible?
Most are not, because you board from the beach or up a ladder. A Blue Haven charter and the Half Moon Bay trip describe their boats as wheelchair accessible, so contact the operator about the boarding before you book.
What should you bring?
Your swimsuit under your clothes, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen or a rash guard, a hat and a dry bag for your phone. Carry cash for tips, and for the Little Water Cay landing fee if your boat stops there and leaves it out.
The water and the wildlife
Will you see sea turtles on a Turks and Caicos snorkeling tour?
Often, but never on a promise. Sea turtles graze the seagrass and reefs off Providenciales, and rays, nurse sharks and dolphins turn up on some days. Keep your distance and let any animal choose how close it comes.
Can you swim with stingrays?
Yes, at Gibbs Cay off Grand Turk, where southern stingrays glide in over the sand around the boats. The cay is in a national park where touching or lifting a ray is prohibited, so you watch from the water and let them pass.
How much is the Iguana Island fee?
The Turks and Caicos National Trust charges $20 for the short tour of Little Water Cay, $25 for the extended tour and $10 for Half Moon Bay, and Trust members go free. The reserve opens Monday to Saturday, 10am to 3:30pm, and one sail leaves the fee to you in cash, so check your card before you go.
What are the rules on Iguana Island?
Stay on the boardwalk, keep your distance and do not feed the iguanas, which is against the law. The Turks and Caicos rock iguana lives nowhere else and is endangered, so take back everything you bring ashore.
Do you need reef-safe sunscreen?
The national park asks snorkellers to use a mineral sunscreen, with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, or to cover up. It is a recommendation rather than a law, and a rash guard and a hat cut how much you need.
Can you snorkel from the beach without a tour?
Yes. Bight Reef, also called Coral Gardens, and Smith's Reef near Turtle Cove are free shore reefs, marked with red buoys, that you swim to from a public beach access. A boat adds the barrier reef, the outer cays, the gear and a crew watching the water, so you may want both.
Are there sharks where you snorkel?
Nurse sharks and small reef sharks turn up at some reef stops. Stay with your group, keep your hands to yourself and follow the crew's lead.
Can you take a conch shell home?
Yes, up to three conch shells without a permit, under the islands' export rules. You may not collect a shell, or anything else, inside a national park, so keep one from a cook-up rather than lifting one off the reef.
How warm is the water?
The Tourist Board puts the sea at about 78°F (26°C) in winter and 85°F (29°C) in summer. At those temperatures you can snorkel without a wetsuit, and a rash guard covers sun and a cool winter morning.

Where do the tours leave from?
Most leave from Providenciales: The Bight Park beach, the Ritz-Carlton and Grace Bay Club beach, the Alexandra Resort, Turtle Cove Marina, Blue Haven Marina and Heaving Down Rock Marina, or straight off a Grace Bay hotel beach. The Grand Turk trip meets by the cruise center. Each card names your meeting point.
Can you snorkel from a cruise ship at Grand Turk?
Yes. The Grand Turk trip checks in at the Local Village, a 10-minute walk from the cruise center, and starts an hour after your ship arrives. It snorkels the Wall and anchors at Gibbs Cay in three and a half hours, so it fits a normal port day.
When is the best time for Turks and Caicos snorkeling?
The water is warm all year, from about 78°F in winter to 85°F in summer. November to April is the cooler season, and June to November is hurricane season, when you book with free cancellation and watch the forecast.
Should you book during hurricane season?
You can, with care. The Atlantic season runs from 1 June to 30 November, so book a fare that refunds up to 24 hours ahead and check the forecast two days out. Morning departures and private charters give you the most room to move.
What happens if the weather turns?
The captain decides on the day, and a boat may snorkel a sheltered spot instead of the planned reef. If the operator cancels, you are offered another date or a full refund, and you can cancel free yourself up to 24 hours ahead. On the Grand Turk trip, a changed snorkel site stays part of the booking and is not refunded.
Is there a whale watching tour?
Not one of these boats is a whale watching tour. Humpback whales pass between Grand Turk and Salt Cay from about January to March, so if you visit then, keep an eye on the horizon from any boat.
What is the Princess Alexandra National Park?
It is the national park, declared in 1992, that covers Grace Bay, Bight Reef, Smith's Reef, Half Moon Bay and Little Water Cay. Inside it, boats keep to 15 mph and nobody may fish, take conch or lobster, or remove shells and coral, so you snorkel over reefs that are left alone.
How do you get to Providenciales?
International flights land at Providenciales International Airport, on the island most of these boats start from. Grand Turk has its own airport and a cruise center, and a ferry links Providenciales with North Caicos from Heaving Down Rock Marina, so you can plan the whole trip around one base.
Is the sunset cruise a snorkel trip?
No. The two-hour Champagne sunset cruise from Grace Bay has no snorkel stop; it is a sail with Champagne, appetizers and drinks for adults 18 and over. Pair it with a morning snorkel boat if you want both on the same day.
